Butchery is an ancient skill – the art of butchering an essential part of rural and urban life for generations. I am interested in the history of the trade – how it was practised in the past and how it is practised now, the skills and equipment involved, what’s changed and why.

I am collecting stories and pictures of butchers around the country. In the era before domestic refrigeration, car ownership and supermarkets there were butchers shops everywhere.  Almost everyone seems to have a friend or family member who was a butcher.  If you have stories or pictures you’d like to share please get in touch.
